Dear Chris:

I am writing to ask you to end the purported “state of emergency” in New Hampshire and to reopen the state for the use and enjoyment of its citizens. I also write to ask that you retract your proposed regulatory scheme and allow businesses to resume normal operations.

Because I am one of your strongest supporters this is a difficult letter to write. I voted for you in the past and I will vote for you in November. I want you reelected at all costs. But I believe the coronavirus course you are following is dangerous to your reelection as well as dangerous to the future of the state.

There is no emergency at this time; end the “emergency”

A. In early March there was a genuine emergency. The confused nature of the coronavirus misled many officials, both Democrats and Republicans, to be surprised in early and mid-March. The so-called “models” were a sham and predicted millions of deaths. We had no idea what would happen nationally, or locally in New Hampshire. Therefore, I do not question the declaration of an emergency in March. It is what it was, a decision based on flawed facts.

B. Our Democratic Party opponents never tire of telling us to follow the “science” and “facts.” Well, what are the science and facts? Fact number one: According to NHPR, approximately 75% of New Hampshire coronavirus deaths were in nursing homes and care facilities (please see link [1] below), NOT in the general population. The number of non-nursing related deaths is infinitesimal. Governor Andrew Cuomo likes to say every life is “priceless.” But every life is not priceless. People are killed and injured all the time. Courts and insurance companies have little difficulty monetizing the price of life. No one can rationally suggest that the entire state should be imperiled to protect a single life.

Right now, 1.3 million people are suffering economically in New Hampshire, in order to possibly avoid a handful of deaths that occur outside nursing homes. Children are hungry, rent and mortgages are behind, and property owners have difficulty paying property taxes to run the state. State government is constantly trying to talk down New Hampshire’s tourism business.

I do not believe you can or should ethically endanger the lives of 1.3 million people to save a handful of otherwise endangered lives. On the contrary, by diluting the anti-coronavirus effort and applying it to all 1.3 million people, you fail to concentrate protective efforts on saving the most vulnerable. The state’s current policy has the perverse impact of endangering the vulnerable while destroying the lives of 1.3 million people without any justification for that approach. (The moronic TV ads saying you are “killing your grandparents” just by trying to live a normal life are just that, moronic ads.)

C. The emergency which existed in March no longer exists. In fact, the lockdown has endangered New Hampshire’s medical system and cost hospitals hundreds of millions of dollars in lost income, much of which will never be recovered. So, once again the lockdown policy has the perverse effect of destroying hospital and medical resources, not protecting them, for future use.

D. The coronavirus situation is a serious public health crisis. But we deal with public health controversies on a regular basis without shutting down the state. How many viruses has China sent us in recent years? We don’t know. But our state medial system clearly has adequate medical resources to deal with the minimum impact of the coronavirus in New Hampshire. Thus, as a matter of “fact” and “law,” there is no basis for emergency action at the present time. Therefore, the emergency declaration should be allowed to expire in a few days.

II.

When is a beach not a beach?

A. The state’s proposals seem to create a distinction between beaches. If you want to use a beach at a lake, that’s apparently OK. But if you want to use a beach at the ocean, that’s illegal. What is the constitutional basis for the distinction? What is the factual basis? (I much prefer the ocean to lakes.)

B. The Hampton Beach situation is pathetic. People showed up last weekend – great – and the police want to shut down parking and limit access to a great state resource (please see link [2] below). Ocean beaches may be among the safest places to be. There is the salt air, the salt water and the bright sunshine which helps kill the virus. There is not a scintilla of evidence to suggest beaches are dangerous and yet Hampton Beach Police want to limit parking and limit access to the beach. It’s hysteria unbound. It’s stupid. Barney Fife policing.

My family has been going to Hampton Beach for over 100 years. The beach has never been closed that I am aware of. There is no basis to close ocean beaches now. When I go, I often see out-of-state license plates. So what? Is the whole world presumptively infected? That’s simply not the case. Ocean beaches are perhaps the healthiest places for people to park, picnic and enjoy themselves in the sun. Free Hampton Beach!

III.

When is a restaurant not a restaurant?

My understanding is that restaurants will only be allowed to seat people outside and on a limited basis. Is the state trying to ensure that the restaurant industry in New Hampshire goes bankrupt? What if it rains? What if it gets dark? Or what if, as we have next week, a cold front slides in? New Hampshire in late August also starts getting chilly at night. The state’s proposals limiting restaurant operations will destroy jobs and undermine our economic future. It’s a nonsense approach.

IV.

A “goofy government” approach could be toxic in November.

A. Right now, the “polls” (which I doubt) show you doing very well. But if the state stays locked up with a cockeyed approach to business over the summer, I can guarantee you that you will be very unpopular in October and November. There is no way the public will accept much more lockdown lifestyle. The stay-at-home approach worked for a while, but that gig is over.

You are going to face serious hostility if you try to implement your latest set of proposals. I can’t predict what the virus will be doing on the 4^th of July but I can guarantee you what the public will be doing on 4^th of July: cursing you out for destroying their state and denying Granite Staters a chance to visit a beach.

B. Please don’t fall into the Kelly Ayotte trap. Kelly Ayotte was a decent senator. I endorsed her and voted for her. But she was ham-handed in her relationship with voters, and especially Republicans. She lost a race she should have won, and she may have also dragged down Trump with her. Ayotte had a way of irrigating Republicans and conservatives which led a few thousand GOP voters to reject her. She had a decent record. But she fumbled away her reelection for no good reason (I will write more about her next week).

Please do not fumble away your reelection through a false sense of complacency that the complicated proposals and regulations you seek to impose on 1.3 million Granite Staters will remain popular, because those rules are based on a nonexistent “emergency” and will only worsen conditions in the state, not improve them. You will be demonized by the Democrats before you know it and, like Ayotte, you will have lost Republican votes by unnecessarily imposing an illogical regulatory scheme on the state.

The Swedish model has yielded a much better outcome than the USA one; why not study it and try to adapt it?

Sweden is an advanced society, comparable in many ways to the United States. But Sweden did not lock down, and has an economy that is the envy of the world. Sweden adopted reasonable regulations, ending large sporting events and public gatherings, but leaving groups of up to 49 people alone. Bars and restaurants did not close. Children stayed in school. The result is that while the United Kingdom and the United states brutalized their populations and devastated their economies, Sweden did not. Sweden did not avoid all deaths but the results there approximate USA conditions without the self-induced economic collapse.

In New Hampshire, a huge percentage of the coronavirus cases are along the Massachusetts border. Why punish the entire state for a highly localized problem in a small slice of Southern New Hampshire? Once again, current state policy makes no sense. How is impoverishing 90% of the state because of an unhealthy situation in 10% of the state a sound policy?

CONCLUSION

In summary:

A. I respectfully request that you not renew the nonexistent emergency when it expires in a few days.

B. I respectfully request that you trust New Hampshire institutions and individuals to make their own decisions. We are a state with an unusually intelligent and highly practical population. Institutions such as hospitals and businesses will make sound decisions to adopt their enterprises to necessary procedures. People do not want to get sick; they can adopt approaches that protect them.

C. If the emergency declaration is renewed, I am planning to launch a civil disobedience campaign to challenge the constitutionality of the emergency and the draconian policies the state is proposing. Please don’t make me do it. I want to be able to cheer you on, not challenge your decisions.

D. No plan can cover everything and mine does not. But I am only proffering a sensible and practical analysis of what can be done to help people, not drag down the state any longer. The great minds in state government are trying to kill a mouse with a machine gun. Do everything that can be done to protect our vulnerable population, where the illnesses and death are concentrated. But do everything you can to roll back the state’s burdensome and often contradictory approach to regulation for healthy, low-risk citizens. End it, don’t mend it.

Let’s meet at the beach and have a ceremony burning the emergency declaration. You’ll be glad you did.

“They are destroying our New Hampshire,” Andy says. “Why aren’t we following the ‘Swedish model’ instead of the ‘Chinese model?’”

(MANCHESTER, NH) (May 1, 2020) --- New Hampshire Republican U. S. Senate candidate Andy Martin says that he objects to the bureaucratic regulatory state that is being imposed on New Hampshire residents. The state is to announce new and continuing regulations, as well as a continuing lock-down of state residents, on May 2nd. An “emergency” declaration has also been renewed by the state. Andy opposes the systematic destruction of New Hampshire, its traditions and its economy.

“It is time for New Hampshire Patriots to stand up and oppose the Stalinist bureaucracy that is about to be dumped on New Hampshire’s residents and businesses,” Andy says. “I not only oppose the continuation of the nonexistent and bogus ‘emergency,’ I oppose the bureaucratic codes that are being used to straightjacket citizens and businesses.

“Public safety and public health are paramount concerns, but when these legitimate concepts are pursued to illegitimate ends, the state is going to collapse. The Supreme Court declared unconstitutional the National Industrial Recovery Act in Schechter Poultry Corp. v. United States, 295 U.S. 495. The NRA was a regulatory scheme similar to the Covid-19 schemes being imposed on Americans by state officials.

“I would like to present the basis for my opposition and forthcoming civil disobedience:

1. The Deep State and incompetent CDC bureaucrats betrayed the American People

“Americans generally, and Granite Staters, have been betrayed by a mindless Washington bureaucracy and Deep State. When the virus is gone and cooler heads review the history of this medical and economic disaster, the public will be outraged at how the American people were betrayed by incompetent bureaucrats, starting at the Centers for Disease Control (“CDC”). The history of how the incompetent CDC refused to use a simple virus test, developed in less than a week in Germany, and initially created a defective test and then a series of delays before a workable ‘test’ was developed, is a disgrace to our democracy. Germany’s test would have worked fine. But the CDC’s ‘not invented here’ arrogance deprived the medical system of testing ability for weeks and allowed the crisis to get out of hand. The CDC deprived the president and others of meaningful information when it was most needed. If I get to the U. S. Senate, I will work to see the CDC head is fired. He was an incompetent leader and administrator.

2. Of necessity, I support and endorse the state’s prior actions

“When the State of New Hampshire eventually declared an ‘emergency’ and lock-down, it was proceeding blindly. A ‘model’ from Imperial College in London was useless. A similar model from the University of Washington was almost as useless. But government bureaucrats such as Anthony Fauci used these defective models to scare the president and the American people by initially predicting millions of deaths and stampeding our society to adopt a nationwide lock-down approach.

“Nevertheless, in the classic computer expression, ‘garbage in garbage out,’ New Hampshire state officials had garbage from the federal government to work with and developed a plan that was garbage. Thus, because state officials were duped by federal bureaucrats, I give New Hampshire a ‘pass’ on their initial lock-down and ‘emergency.’

3. Why was the Swedish model not used; why was it ignored?

“Sweden is a civilized society. Swedish leaders saw the hysteria enveloping the world and chose a different approach. No, the Swedish model did not completely avoid loss of life or illness. But Sweden never closed its restaurants and bars, never locked-down the people. Instead, Swedish authorities enacted sensible restrictions: groups larger than 50 were banned, large events such as athletic events were barred, and Swedes were asked to exercise common sense. The result: Sweden has a death rate similar to that in the United States. But Sweden’s economy is intact, primary schools are open, and the nation is moving ahead.

“There were and are risks in any approach, including the Swedish system, but Fauci-led statist bureaucrats would not consider anything but medieval quarantines, knowing full well the quarantines would destroy entire industries and might trigger a depression.

“Why is the New Hampshire state government now not looking to Sweden as a model, and insisting on imposing a Fauci-Chinese dictatorship on the Granite State?

4. Today, May 2, there is no “emergency” and no basis for New Hampshire bureaucrats to impose their imperial rule on residents

“In my opinion, the claim that there is a basis for an emergency declaration today, May 2, is an insult to the intelligence and grossly unconstitutional. In my opinion, a bona fide ‘emergency’ should (1) involve a sudden or surprise act; (2) a situation that is out of control or difficult to control; (3) a lack of an established protocol or resources to address the situation.

“In March, the people were incited by the scare tactics broadcast by the national media and Governor Andrew Cuomo’s hysteria that 140,000 ICU units and and 40,000 ventilators were needed immediately. Cuomo also tried to scare the nation by saying ‘You’re next. Tomorrow, you’re New York.’ Well, time has passed, and Manchester is not New York. New Hampshire is not New York.

“Nevertheless, New Hampshire bureaucrats, without much critical thought, declared the original ‘emergency.’ I accepted that action when it was imposed, because the state was given defective modeling information by Washington. My three-factor emergency approach (above) reasonably applied.

“But today there is no coronovirus emergency. There are a handful of corona patients in New Hampshire hospitals.

“But there is a genuine, non-corona virus emergency. New Hampshire’s health care system is begun destroyed by the false emergency, doctors and nurses are being let go. Hospitals are losing hundreds of millions of dollars a month. This money will never be recovered. There is an emergency because sick people with cancer and heart ailments have been deprived of medical care for months. But the ‘emergency’ that was recently renewed is nonexistent. It is a political fraud on the people of the state. Bureaucrats are ignoring the real emergency, the unemployment and critical state of health systems that are being destroyed, while they develop plans to regulate state lakes and beaches. Disgraceful.

5. The scatter-shot approach has killed our senior citizens

“Ironically, while failing to protect the ‘vulnerable,’ on the contrary the emergency and lock-down destroyed the vulnerable. While there are a handful of cases in every age category, the vast majority of deaths were of people over 60 and, proportionately, of nursing home and care home residents. So, by locking down the entire state and pretending the entire state was equally at risk from the virus, we neglected to protect the very groups of people that were in reality vulnerable. The deaths in nursing homes were entirely expected. Nursing homes were neglected; they were the stepchildren of the medical system. So vulnerable seniors were ignored, and died, while state bureaucrats lavished attention on groups that were at minimal risk, claiming they were ‘protecting everyone’ when in reality they were protecting no one.

“The scatter-shot approach not only failed, it is a disgrace to our humanity that we abandoned our most vulnerable citizens to neglect and death. Had competent officials sat down and reviewed input from hospitals and nursing facilities, the anti-virus efforts would have been concentrated on seniors and the critically ill and not on the blunderbuss scattershot approach of imprisoning on 1.3 million New Hampshire residents, almost all of whom were not ill and faced no serious risk. Dr. Benjamin Chan, the state’s ‘epidemiologist,’ proved to be an incompetent bureaucrat. Why hasn’t Chan been fired? Because state government is afraid to admit that Concord officials botched the corona virus response. Fire Chan! He’s worthless.

6. New Hampshire’s economy will not survive the latest regulatory proposals

“State government proposes to impose an extended regulatory regime on state businesses starting Friday. A nonexistent ‘emergency’ is used as the pretext to enslave over a million people and lock them in their homes, deprive their children of an education and impoverish the citizenry.

“Restaurants can’t survive with Concord bureaucrats running their establishments. Salons are being regulated as what services they can and can’t provide. And so on.

“There are probably 150,000 unemployed people in New Hampshire, and many more under-employed. The state’s economy will soon collapse and Democrats will gleefully proclaim Donald Trump the new Herbert Hoover.

7. Civil disobedience is the inevitable outcome

“New Englanders are a pretty law-abiding and civil people. But the Boston Tea Party is also in our history. I foresee massive civil disobedience starting this summer, as Concord bureaucrats try to deprive the people of access to their property, yes, the people own the state, the state does not own the people.

“When the American Revolution began, most people opposed the patriots and there were only a handful of people willing to confront the King of England. So, don’t be fooled by the claim that the vast majority of New Hampshire residents want to be ruled and regulated by Concord bureaucrats. They don’t. As President George Bush once said, ‘[You] will hear from us.’

8. The current rule-and-regulate regime will decimate Republicans in November

“If Republicans as a party do not rise up and oppose the imposition of draconian regulation and restrictions on New Hampshire residents, by the time the virus has passed voters are only going to remember their endless and continuing economic pain, and will take revenge on so-called ‘conservatives’ who refused to open their mouths to oppose the craziness that is/was being imposed on them.

9. The polls are being manipulated to deceive the people

“It is obvious that many people are afraid, especially senior citizens. But the idea that the vast majority of New Hampshire residents want to remain entombed at home, while their jobs disappear and they become impoverished, is nonsense. We are closing county fairs and events, out in the sun and fresh air? Why?

“The motto of this state used to be ‘Live Free or Die.’ Are the bureaucrats going to change the motto to ‘Live Enslaved and Like it?’ President Reagan warned us our freedom and liberty are always endangered by power-hungry bureaucrats. Today, the combined threat posed by the tech titans (Amazon, Twitter, Facebook, Apple, etc.) and the Deep State is an even more insidious than the Cold War. President Trump talks of an ‘invisible enemy.’ The virus may not be visible, but the politicians and malefactors of great wealth are the real enemy and they are increasingly powerful and visible.

10. The battle for the beaches will be a “beetch”

“My family has been going to Hampton Beach for 100 years. Hampton Beach has never closed. There is no reason to close the state’s ocean beaches now. The mantra that New Hampshire will be overrun by hordes of diseased Massachusetts residents is disgraceful and insulting (should Bay Staters just send a check in the mail?). The safest place to be may be a beach. Fresh air and sunlight are virus-killers. But yet the state’s bureaucrats want to kill an entire beach season, and deprive the people of access to the safest place in the state. On what meat do these Caesars feed? We must begin a ‘battle for the beaches’ and liberate our shores from the invaders and Chinese-thinking regulators in Concord.

11. The usurpation of power by “emergency” is unconstitutional

“Government bureaucrats, even elected officials, do not have the power under either the New Hampshire or U. S. Constitutions to rule by government ‘order,’ and control the table seating of restaurants, the access to public property such as shores and lakes, and in general to control every aspect of our daily lives based on a nonexistent ‘emergency.’ The proposed plans to be released Friday are unconstitutional.

“Well, what do you think?” asks Andy Martin. “Live free or live under the bureaucratic/regulatory state being imposed by Concord?”

Coronavirus disaster and your reelection

Dear Donald:

I always like to remind you that forty years ago I approved your lease to move into the Olympic Tower on Fifth Avenue. Later, you asked me to meet with your architects for Trump Tower, so we go back a long way. Until recently, I had an original set of the blueprints for Trump Tower.

Forty years later, I am again giving you advice.

First, I support everything you have done in terms of the fifteen-day moratorium on movement to fight the coronavirus emergency.

Second, I must advise you that unless you end the moratorium at the end of fifteen days, you are not likely to be reelected. The republic will survive; but your electoral prospects will not.

Eighty million Americans are quarantined. Only a handful need to be in that status. The doctors’ warnings become ever more lurid, while the threat of an actual emergency recedes. America is not Italy. Why don’t the media ever mention Germany, where there have been far fewer deaths?

In this letter I would like to provide a road map for you to understand why you must end the moratorium and reverse course if you are to save the economy and save your own prospects for reelection.

1. There is a reason scientists do not run the world

Doctors and scientists are usually very bright people. But they live in their own medical/laboratory silos. They are asked to treat disease, not provide practical solutions for the fate of 330 million Americans. The American people elected you, not doctors and scientists, to make life and death decisions about our nation. You have a great science team and I do not have a bad word to say about any of them. But they are not charged with saving the nation, you are. Doctors and scientists have manifested a narrow focus on the disease, and not focused on the economic disease of shutting down the nation’s economy. Their perspective is much too narrow.

2. The economy is much worse than you realize

I am sure you have seen the same numbers I have. The economy is disintegrating much faster than anyone anticipated. In a couple of weeks there will be little left to save. People who live week to week live week to week. Even prosperous middle-class families have few reserves. Burdening the economy with trillions in “stimulus” will only stifle the recovery. The sooner you act, the less damage to the economy, the better the prospect of an expedited recovery.

3. There is no such thing as a “V” recovery right now

There have, of course, been quick recoveries from some recessions in our history. But the current recession is not like earlier experiences. Advisers who tell you that workers who have been devastated economically are just going to turn on and start spending in June or July are, frankly, nuts. There will be no V-style recovery if you allow the shutdown to persist beyond the 15-day cutoff. A two trillion-dollar stimulus law will be a drop in the bucket by the time the relief actually reaches workers and businesses.

4. Sensible public health measures can still continue

Even as you direct that life resume (but no federal aid to states and cities that refuse to resume operations) sensible measures can be continued. People should still wash their hands. Avoid crowds when possible, etc. But, ultimately, most people are healthy and are going to remain healthy.

5. You must act like Rudy Giuliani did, on 9/12, not 9/11

You and I were both in New York on 9/11. We saw the collapse in public confidence. Rudy Giuliani did a masterly job on 9/11 by holding the city together. But his greatest work came the next day, 9/12. I have often said that if Mayor Dinkins had been in charge, New York would still be wallowing in 9/11 remorse.

Giuliani, on the other hand, realized that to save the city he had to order an immediate restart. He ordered city government to resume operations. The subways started running, city services were opened. Restarting after 9/11 was difficult for a few days but the city survived because Giuliani forced it to revive.

Today, some of your advisors want you to believe that you can destroy the economy and it will simply “restart” on command some time in the summer. That is not happening. A few days of disintegration can be recovered; weeks of decay and financial collapse will not be undone with the flick of a switch.

6. Like a quarterback, you must throw the ball ahead, not behind

You need to be a risk taker as never before. Like a quarterback, what you do this Friday will have to anticipate where the disease and public health measures will be next week and beyond, not where they are today. If you wait for the doctors and scientists to sound the “all clear,” the economy will be dead and it will take years to revive, not days or weeks.

The medical establishment is rushing to create new cures and new ways to care for patients. Those efforts are proceeding exponentially. By anticipating those efforts will be successful you, as the quarterback, need to throw the ball forward so that the public can receive the benefits early, not late.

7. Think like an economist, not a scientist

Some media, and even you, have tossed around “war” analogies. But war analogies all point to the opposite approach. In war, you take risks with lives to ultimately save lives. A few weeks ago, we celebrated the 75^th anniversary of the landing on Iwo Jima. The Navy knew there would be casualties. But no one knew how many. Tens of thousands of Marines were killed or wounded. The losses were horrific. Should we have stopped the war because of those loses? Of course not.

Should we destroy the economy to save a few thousand lives? I would say “no.” We need to risk lives to save the economy. (Texas Lt. Gov. Patrick has a similar approach.) You remember during the Viet-Nam War when an officer said “We had to destroy the village of Ben Tré to save it.” Are you going to be the president who destroys our economy to save it? I hope not.

An economist would calculate the potential loss of life against the potential ruin to the economy. A few days ago, we heard there were “100,000 cases in Ohio.” Where are they? There have been wildly exaggerated estimates of death and injury by politicians and scientists. The actual loss of life has been minimal. You can safely risk a few lives to save the nation. That is what a war president would do.

8. Politics

If you wait until the public health crisis is over to sound an “all clear” for the economy, your presidency will be over and your reelection prospects will be dead. All the Democrats have to do is sit on the sidelines and sabotage you, and then allow their media sycophants to claim the Democrats, not you, won the inevitable victory.

If you have brass cohones, I would pull the relief bills from the congress and save taxpayers trillions of dollars. We are only proposing to spend trillions because we anticipate a self-inflicted injury on the economy. If you jump-start the economy this weekend and order people and events to reopen, the long-term injury will be minimal and you won’t need anywhere as much stimulus.

You could save a minimum of a trillion dollars in unnecessary spending and taxation. Most people can survive the 15-day shutdown, small business and large companies alike. They will grit their teeth, struggle and restart their businesses next Monday. No one has to be ordered to restart or resume. Most people will want to assume the declining health risk to save their lives and their businesses. The need for massive stimulus will be minimized. The medical risk will be manageable.

By a symbolic leader. Reserve a table at The Palm for Monday night. Go out to a fast food place (no delivery to the White House!). Fly on an airline. It will create a world of confidence. That’s what real wartime president do. Be visible, not hidden in the WH. The Gipper knew what to do, how to rally public opinion. You have a template.

If you wait another couple of weeks to reopen the economy, the economy will be dead and claims of a “V” recession will prove illusory, at least for your reelection prospects. The “man who destroyed our economy” will be the Democrats’ new President Herbert Hoover.

I want you reelected.

Be bold. Be brave. Reopen the economy. Full speed ahead is the only way to save America. And save your presidency.

P.S. Some good news on the anti-malaria pill you are pushing into widespread testing and distribution to care for coronavirus patients. I went to Viet-Nam several times (www.AndyMartin.com). Soldiers were routinely given the anti-malaria drug. It was called the “shit pill” for obvious reasons. Hundreds of thousands of veterans can attest it is safe. (Because I was a civilian, I was not compelled to take the pill; I didn’t.) Today’s pill is a variation on the Viet-Nam era drug.

(MANCHESTER, NH) (March 2, 2020) --- New Hampshire Republican U. S. Senate candidate Andy Martin says that “in every election cycle, some candidate makes outrageously ignorant remarks and sinks his or her candidacy. Remember the senate candidate who said women could not get pregnant from rape? In 2020, Donald Bolduc is mentally unfit for a U. S. Senate campaign and should withdraw immediately. Bolduc makes Joe Biden look like a mental giant.”

Andy says that because Bolduc’s wacko “Civil War” remarks were taped and are on the Internet, Bolduc’s candidacy is doomed.

Bolduc told a campaign forum on January 28th that the Civil War between the North and South was fought because of “gridlock” and “not being a partnered team.” A tape of Bolduc’s remarks is available at the link below. Bolduc was apparently being “tracked” by a Democratic Party operative who recorded Bolduc’s wacky remarks and passed the tape on to a liberal publication. New Hampshire Democrats obviously have the tape but incompetent local “Fake News media” (WMUR, Union Leader) are not yet aware of the tape.

“My campaign has a great deal of negative analysis on Bolduc, but we were planning to roll out our attacks later in the primary season as part of a series of exposures of my opponents.

“But an effort by crooked Republicans to attack my candidacy by trying to conduct a rigged debate at St. Anselm college in March convinced me to highlight how incompetent and self-defeating my opponents are. None of them is a serious opponent for the incumbent senator and none of them knows how to conduct a campaign in the glare of national scrutiny and publicity.

“I first encountered Don Bolduc last fall, at a campaign event,” Martin says. “He was jumping around the room as though he were on drugs. It was creepy to watch his ‘performance.’

“I respect Bolduc’s military service. Even more than respect, my own family struggles with the aftermath of war. And I personally have been under “friendly fire” and shot at in wars from the 60’s (Viet-Nam) to the 00’s (Iraq). So I know what Bolduc went through and is going through. But Bolduc’s military service is not a blank check for political office.

“The fact that Bolduc uses a service dog to campaign is a clear sign he most likely could not stand up to the stresses and pressures of a campaign for national office.

“Bolduc has service-related issues that appear to occlude his judgment and competence. Or maybe his Civil War remarks indicate that he’s just plain stupid. But saying that New Hampshire men went south to fight and die in the Civil War because of ‘gridlock’ and there ‘not being a partnered team’ somewhere is the kind of gobbledygook that makes a candidate look like a moron. Bolduc appears to be unaware of the issue of slavery and the attack by the rebels on Fort Sumpter. There are no training wheels for U. S. Senate candidates; there is no excuse for wacko remarks, on tape no less.

“The tape of Bolduc’s remarks is a Sword of Damocles pointed straight at the heart of his campaign.

“So why is Bolduc running? Most likely the poor man has been convinced by political consultants that Bolduc is senate material. These consultants are using Bolduc’s name and military career in an attempt to raise large sums of money, most of which will be spent on advertising later in the election cycle and result in millions of dollars in commissions for the consultants. In sum and substance, Bolduc is a dupe of his campaign advisers.

“Recently one of Bolduc’s ‘supporters’ abandoned his campaign and joined a rival campaign, not a good sign.

“Bolduc’s consultants made a big mistake when they tried to corrupt the Young Republicans at St. Anselm’s. We will be filing suit to stop a tax-exempt, religious college from engaging in political skullduggery. I offered the President of St. Anselm’s an opportunity to stop the corruption at his college and he has not responded. So, this week we will be suing the college to stop the misuse of resources.

“I have been involved in New Hampshire politics for over thirty (30) years. I have been an active candidate at the state level for a decade, while seeking to modernize and reform the state party. I have seen the New Hampshire GOP self-destruct every election cycle.

“My own media skills are highly respected both in New Hampshire and nationally.

“In 2018 I exposed and defeated a primary opponent who had a million-dollar war chest. His money turned out to be worthless.

“We are starting early this season, and we will be exposing the latest corruption and abuse in the New Hampshire Republican Party (and St. Anselm’s). Party leaders have obviously not learned any lessons from spending hundreds of thousands of dollars in wasted legal fees over the past decade to undermine my campaigns. I will keep teaching them a lesson in honest politics and good government.

New Hampshire GOP party leaders have lost every congressional election over the past decade, except for one Republican race they won and where party leaders promptly attacked and defeated their own congressman (Guinta)! New Hampshire Republicans have an embarrassing record of corruption, incompetence and self-destruction.

“Thus, the sooner Bolduc gets out of the race, the sooner he can continue his recovery,” Andy says. “New Hampshire Republicans cannot treat a candidate who is ignorant of basic Civil War history as a serious candidate for the U. S. Senate. Democrats will savage Bolduc if he wins the primary. Bolduc may be an experienced soldier but he has no experience in political warfare. A military ‘fruit salad’ (chest of medals) does not protect you from being a political fruitcake. Bolduc has no idea what is in stock for him. New Hampshire Democrats play dirty and they play for keeps.

“Mitch McConnell and others who have mistakenly endorsed or encouraged Bolduc are also going to be highly embarrassed. Bolduc is even more past his prime than Joe Biden.”

Dear Donald:

I can still remember the day, forty years ago in 1979, when I was sitting in my apartment at Olympic Tower Condominium and the staff brought in a “board package” (application to rent) for a unit at Olympic Tower at 641 Fifth Avenue in New York. The application was from you. I knew who you were; you were already well known in New York. I was a member of the Board of Managers of Olympic Tower and signed off on your application to move in; later the full board ratified my action.

We were never close friends but we were civil to each other and at some point you asked me to meet with your architects who were designing Trump Tower. I was an expert on multi-use high rise buildings. In the 1980’s Spy Magazine said that we were both “litigious New Yorkers.” In the 1990’s I sued you to block the conversion of Mar-A-Lago into a club in Palm Beach. In the “naughts” I was in the background at the church when you married Melania and now in the current decade, I sometimes see you at services on Christmas and Easter Sunday.

I go into some detail as to our past because having known you for forty years, I am inclined to be a supporter. Despite your relentless exaggeration, on the whole you have had a positive impact. I want to support you.

I supported you in 2016 and I was delighted when you were elected. Frankly, I hoped you would become more “presidential,” (you promised some of your excesses would be toned down). You have not.

But it was not until you slandered General Mattis a few days ago that I felt you had gone too far. Too far for me for sure. Every day there is a new avalanche of misinformation.

I have spent the past fifty years in and out of the Middle East. Four generations of my family have served there in some capacity. Unlike you, I know something about the region.

Your latest claim, “We did not promise to protect the Kurds until Kingdom Come,” is literally correct. But then we have no such obligation to other countries either. You are not “bringing our troops home,” and the numbers deployed in the Middle East are increasing. How long are you committed to Iraq? That is likely where you will get similar pressure to withdraw very soon.

Ironically, this letter has been in preparation for ten months, since General (SecDef) Mattis resigned and others also left because of differences over your Syria policy. You just kept digging yourself a deeper hole over the past ten months.

Last weekend, five (5) people were killed in Chicago, almost as many troops as have died in Syria in four years. At Fort Stewart, Georgia, last weekend a tragic training accident cost at least three soldiers their lives, a third of the losses we have endured in Syria in five years. Every time you use military casualties to excuse your surrender in Syria I ask, “Are you going to withdraw from Chicago, which is infinitely more dangerous?” Stop abusing and misusing the sacrifices of your troops to cover for your own cowardice.

We didn’t have a legal obligation to defend the Kurds; we had a moral one. We only lost a handful of soldiers in five years because the Kurds lost over ten thousand fighters. Military people are not paid a lot of money for the dangers they assume. But persons in uniform are bound by the morality of our military history. Politicians are often craven and immoral; they have no scruples, Shifty Schiff for example. But soldiers and Marines are held to a higher standard; that was the first thing I learned as a military cadet. The moral imprimatur of American support for those who fight and die alongside us and for us is a sacred commitment. In more than fifty years overseas I have always depended on local people to protect me and assist me. I would never abandon them.

By refusing to defend the ground we controlled in Syria you casually allowed a Turkish dictator to make a fool of you. We did not go into Syria “for 30 days,” as you repeatedly lie. People who knew realized it could be a decades-long process to defeat ISIS and Islamist extremism.

You allowed Erdogan to tell you he planned to invade a member of the United Nations and attempt to ethnically cleanse thousands of square miles of territory occupied by civilians. Where do you get the authority to “negotiate” the invasion of a member of the United Nations by an Islamist dictator? That’s what even you admit to have done. Disgraceful.

You have dishonored our troops in the field, and you have dishonored your supporters. Please don’t tell me people at your rallies cheer when you say you are “bringing our troops home.” You’re not bringing them home; they are redeploying in the Middle East and you are sending thousands more troops to the region. As a result of your latest disaster, eventually you will have to send more troops to stamp out Islamist extremism. They want to destroy us. (Question: have you asked the Iraqis what they think of your appropriating their nation as a base to fight ISIS in Syria? I am waiting for the backlash.)

Your refusal to stand up to the Turkish dictator Erdogan will stain your presidency forever. You surrendered our loyalties and our national security to an Islamist dictator. In the words of Joseph Welch, “At long last, have you left no sense of decency?” In surrendering you gave new life to ISIS terrorists and very possibly doomed your presidency.

As I was writing this letter, there were reports of yet another zig-zag, that you might leave troops in Syria, though not enough to actually enforce our national interests. Everyone, even your opponents, wants to some day bring our troops home. But why not the troops in Japan? Tens of thousands in Europe? Are they also being withdrawn? Instead, you have singled out 2,000 troops, almost a rounding error, to focus on removing them when the prime beneficiaries will be the Turkish dictator, the Russian dictator, the Syrian dictator and ISIS. Do you understand why people doubt your motives? A great nation has commitments and alliances, something you refuse to acknowledge. You are acting like a Brooklyn landlord, not president of the United States.

You will be “remembered for foreign policy,” all right, as you unfortunately predicted. For allowing atrocities to take place, as when prisoners and unarmed civilians were executed by Erdogan’s bloodthirsty stooges. You will be reviled in American history. People around the whole world hear and see your flatulent rhetoric, and they are disgusted. They ridicule you and despise you. Your claim that “America has never been more respected” is delusional. Except for Viet-Nam we have never been more reviled around the world in my lifetime or yours. Your foreign policy has been an embarrassing failure.

People made mistakes during the Viet-Nam era, but they were dealing with the imperfect information of that age. Kissinger betrayed the Kurds, but then the Shah of Iran fell, and we are still paying the price for Kissinger’s duplicity. But no president, until you, has ever cut-and-run from our positions, to the point where Russians showed up last week and found hot coffee on the tables and refrigerators stuffed with food. You surrendered, and thereby dishonored yourself, our national security and the sacred honor of our military. Your days of exploiting the military are at an end.

Your asinine claim “we were caught between two armies” is nonsense. There were “two armies” only because you caused that mess to exist due to your cowardice in the face of the Turk. You’re not fooling anyone who knows anything about military history. Against dictators, you are a coward, plain and simple.

I always thought George W. Bush and Barack Obama would fight it out for “worst president in modern American history.” But you have now become a “contenda” for a three-way race to the bottom. You ridicule Bush for his self-destructive invasion in 2003 (which I opposed). I marched against the Iraq invasion down Fifth Avenue. You were nowhere to be seen. But your Syrian surrender is an even more egregious abandonment of national security and honor than Bush’s and Obama’s. Americans will die in the future because of your cowardice in the face of the Turk and the Russian.

You have accomplished one noteworthy thing: other than Senator Rand Paul, and Tucker Carlson’s Colonel McGregor, you have united the American people against your policy. You’ve heard the expression, “these colors don’t run.” Well, Donald Trump’s colors do run, and he lies about it every day as women and children are slaughtered. You were punked by an Islamist dictator. The whole world saw you for what you are.

So, where are we?

The Trump name, the Trump brand, which you spent a lifetime establishing, is in tatters. By the time you leave the White House, “Trump” will be a dirty word and your business will be endangered.

You have had an administration of extraordinary accomplishments, such as record low unemployment and record economic prosperity. But all of your accomplishments are being drowned out by your relentless blabbering and your surrender in Syria. You have achieved national unity by making yourself a target of national scorn.

Impeachment. I have some good news and bad news. The case against you is garbage. Total and complete exaggeration. But you are impeaching yourself with your incompetent defense and irrational behavior. President Clinton knew how to defend against impeachment, and he won. But your defense is no defense, just a daily stream of nonsense and crazy talk. Rudy Giuliani? I faced off against him across the table in the 1980’s. Unlike General Mattis, Giuliani is grossly overrated.

The actual constitutional foundation for impeaching you is nonsense. You have not committed any high crimes or misdemeanors. But the Democrats want to wound you, and you are allowing them to bleed you, day by day. You give energy to the impeachment by acting as though it is a given. No, it isn’t.

Good cases are lost. And bad cases are won. Every day. You have a good case but are defeating yourself. If you don’t allow your staff to organize a coherent impeachment defense team you will be impeached. Mulvaney laughed when he was asked if you could be convicted and removed. He thought the question was a joke. It is not a joke. I believe you can still avoid being impeached, and I believe you can avoid being convicted and removed. But not with your current approach.

You need to address the nation and apologize. You need to admit to mistakes and you need to promise to do better. With a skillful defense, you could stave off impeachment and conviction. But not with your current calamitous behavior. Nixon saved himself in 1952 with the “Checkers” speech. You need to save yourself with a similar appeal.

You need to stop lying to the American people. No, you did not “capture ISIS.” It was the Kurds who spilled blood, not Trump. I am amazed the media keep accusing you of a “quid quo pro,” when you need an opposite number for a quid pro quo. Consulting among your own team and own government is never a quid pro quo. But, yes, you made mistakes.

When I see you in church on Christmas and Easter, you partake of the Confession of sin. Without a sincere confession to the American people, and a whole new approach to speech and leadership, your presidency is doomed.

Be aware, I am representative of the broader “base.” I supported you when you announced (I delayed my public endorsement because I was attacking Jeb Bush and did not want Bush to use me against you.) So I have been with you since the start. I watch the rallies. They are entertaining, but you cannot win an election with your own base. You are losing ordinary people who find your language and self-delusion offensive. So, cut it. You need a “Come to Jesus” moment. Without genuine genuflection and a sincere apology, you will be defeated and we will enter a national Dark Age of taxation and enslavement by the Democrats. For which you will blamed into eternity.

So, yes, we still need you if you are capable of being a leader. I still can’t figure out if your endless blathering is due to a speech problem or some form of degenerative condition, but you need to stop exaggerating, stop lying and come to ground on your own. People will love you for it.

Because of your many successes, you should be at 70% support among the American people, but you’re not. I watched the 2018 election and said to myself “Doesn’t he realize his crazy behavior is turning off voters, and if the D’s take the House, he will endure extreme suffering?” You didn’t and you are.

Keep your apology approach simple, direct and coherent. A little humor is all right, but not an endless stream of consciousness. You can still recover if you admit error and change course.

I’m also a candidate. So I am responsive to voters as well. I will soon be facing off against your puppy, Corey Looneydowski. There is no way New Hampshire Republicans can elect a polarizing, philandering candidate to the U. S. Senate. Indeed, if Looneydowski runs, he will preclude you from carrying New Hampshire. New Englanders are pretty skeptical. They don’t like over-wrought presentations. And New England has only one GOP federal official. How do we change that? Not by abandoning Syria and encouraging Looneydowski.

I am not writing at length to hurt you. I am writing to encourage you to face reality. I am going to vote for you in 2020. The current crop of D’s doesn’t offer a rational option. But voters sometimes take irrational action when faced with a candidate they don’t like. LBJ won the greatest victory in American history in 1964 (I worked in the 89^th Congress). Four years later, he couldn’t even run for reelection. Political fortunes can change in an instant, or a phone call.

Please, please apologize to the American people, send our troops back to Syria and tell the bloodthirsty Erdogan to take his war criminals out of Syria, which is still an independent country, not subject to invasion by Erdogan. Restore honor to our men and women who today are being pelted with shoes and potatoes because their commander-in-chief is a delusional coward who abandoned them to ISIS.

ISIS is still very much here/there, and if you do not reverse course, ISIS and all the other dictators and bullies around the world will make your life miserable in 2020. They will extract maximum humiliation just when you are most vulnerable during your reelection campaign. Why not listen to people who know more than you do about the Middle East and Asia, and stop pretending you are an expert on everything? You’re not. Stop acting like you’re a confused old man, like Joe Biden.

The IG Report (link below) is chilling. Contrary to your claims, we are going to be in the Middle East for a very long time. Stop saying ISIS is 7,000 miles away. That is delusional. On September 11, 2001, the Middle East was a subway ride away from you and me, as thousands died, mainly because of Saudi Arabian fanatics from a country you are now reinforcing with more troops. Unless you restore order and reverse your bad decisions, Americans will die again and this time you will be blamed. In closing, I have been hard and harsh, but you deserve it. If you reverse course, you will be reelected. If you continue along the current path, I think there is a strong possibility Senate Republicans will vote to convict and remove you from office as the lesser of two evils (removing a president and starting the 2020 campaign with a clean candidate, versus having you as their doomed leader).

You have the challenge of a lifetime, to change your approach to leadership and to restore integrity and rationality to the processes of your government. Other men in history have risen to the challenge. Change is never easy, but if you fail to change there is almost no hope for you or your legacy.
