Dear
Granite Stater:
How we
feel in private has no correlation to how we are expected to behave in public.
Ordinary citizens are given a lot more freedom, though not unlimited, in comparison
with candidates for public office and public officials.
The
term “Pansy” has always referred to a homosexual man in my many decades as an
adult. Not so long ago, references to homosexuality in politics were
acceptable. And while the Republican Party has been slower than the Democratic
Party to welcome homosexuals, our greatest and recent Director of National
Intelligence (“DNI”) Rick Grenell was--. Well, you know what. (Only 8 years ago
the Romney campaign had dumped Grenell because of his sexual orientation.)
Unlike
some conservative regions, New Hampshire is an exceptionally tolerant state.
The Log Cabin Republicans, a gay organization, is accepted in the GOP today,
when it was less widely accepted a decade ago. Times change, sometimes slowly, sometimes
overnight.
LGBT
Republicans are welcome in my campaign. Even I have much to learn about human
sexuality. But as a conservative Christian, I can state unequivocally that we
are created by our Creator; we do not create ourselves. What we make of our
lives is our responsibility; how we are born is not.
You
don’t have to agree with everything the courts say, or your priest or pastor
says, to accept the unyielding principle that homosexuals should not be
demonized in public or politics. No American should live in fear of being verbally
or physically attacked or discriminated against in a political campaign.
That
is why Bolduc’s TV ad attacking “pansies” is so bizarre and outrageous.
Bolduc
suffers from PTSD. He has my highest respect and, yes, love, for his unbelievable
service to our nation. I have a personal sense of what he has endured on the
battlefield. But neither PTSD nor military service are a blank check for
bizarre behavior, especially as a candidate for the U. S. Senate. I will be
analyzing PTSD at a later date. But PTSD is clearly not an excuse to act unhinged.
Bolduc is free to believe what he believes in the privacy of his own home; he
is not free to broadcast his beliefs on TV if he expects to lead the party in
2020.
During
the campaign, Bolduc has made several strange statements. I have exposed some
of them, and there are more exposés coming in the
days before the primary election.
The total
bad judgment Bolduc has exhibited by running a “pansy” TV ad disqualifies him
to lead the Republican Party ticket in November. Whatever your personal views
on homosexuality, and I fully accept that there is still a broad spectrum of
opinion in our party, public attacks on homosexuals or the use of slurs such as
“Pansy” are not acceptable. There is no way he can win in November. Period.
